New Augsburg Municipal Library

Schrammel Architekten, Dr. Ing. Stefan SchrammelGermany

Using a contemporary architectural language the New Augsburg Municipal Library synthesizes the elements of glass, transparency and perspective as well as openness. Extending over three floors with a combined floor space of 4,200 sqm, all library departments are grouped around a naturally illuminated courtyard (Atrium). The new building is accessible from five different directions. Various shades of orange and red are used to structure the administration wing.

The terracotta hue of the interior’s rubber flooring mirrors the colour of the forecourt. “The interior colours correspond to the colour spectrum of light.” (quote of the architect). The colours orange, red, purple, yellow and green infuse the different departments and resurface as elementary colours in the floor and wall designs.

From the outset, all stakeholders demanded innovative energy concepts with the following goals: passive use of solar energy, high-level use of daylight, natural ventilation, temperatures not to exceed 26° Celsius. This complex planning process was based on the so-called “Clima-Design” concept combining architecture with building technology.
