The building was constructed in 1860 in the architectural style of historical eclecticism. The exterior cubing – a five-level central building and two long four-level lateral wings with a pitched roof and prominent corner towers – was rebuilt during the reconstruction. In addition, also the distinctive characteristics of the interior of the building are made visible again. This applies particularly to the precious cast-iron column-structure and the cylindrical vaulted ceiling. The building is located not far from the Main Building of Chemnitz University of Technology where currently nearly 10.000 students are enrolled. The city center of Chemnitz, a city of 248.000 inhabitants, is in walking distance.
